Best Beer Gardens

When the sun shines there’s little better than a cold drink in a great British beer garden, especially after a walk or day out. Here are a few suggestions…

Closest to The Coach House Farm:

The New Inn, Broadclyst
Whimple Road, EX5 3BX

A local pub with a selection of real ales (CAMRA member) and serving good pub food. The New Inn has a large garden with benches and tables and chairs with sun umbrellas.

  • Car park
  • Serves food

The Red Lion, Broadclyst
EX5 3EL

If you take the footpath to the village, you can’t miss The Red Lion. It has a few benches at the front of the pub with a view of the church and a separate enclosed beer garden.

  • Car park
  • Serves food

While out and about:

The Anchor Inn, Beer
Fore Street, EX12 3ET

Overlooking Beer beach and its iconic fishing boats this mini beer garden has beautiful views.

  • Serves food
  • Park in council car park in the village
  • Local walk suggestion: Take the coast path in either direction from the pub – expect hills and beautiful views. Click here for example routes

Double Locks, Exeter
Canal Banks, EX2 6LT

Right next to the canal and best accessed from the canal and river walking/cycling trails, this local institution has loads of outdoor space and is always popular in fine weather.

  • Serves food
  • Car park (accessed via Marsh Barton trading estate, note there is a very narrow canal bridge to negotiate if driving, not for the nervous driver). Parking near the Quay and walking or cycling to Double Locks is a very pleasant alternative.

Turf Locks, Exminster
EX6 8EE

A beautiful setting between the canal and the River Exe and where the two meet. One that is definitely best reached on foot or by bike along the canal path from Powderham, Countess Wear or Exeter Quay. Or catch the foot ferry from Topsham – check times before setting off.

  • Serves food
  • No car park (closest 1.5 mile walk along canal path)

Fisherman’s Cot, Bickleigh
EX16 8RW

Another riverside location, this pub has a garden on the banks of the Exe next to Bickleigh Bridge and its weir.

Coombe Cellars, Combeinteignhead (pronounced coom-in-teen-head)
TQ12 4RT

A different river this time! A short drive from Shaldon in south Devon, this pub is on the banks of the River Teign, a lovely spot.

  • Car park
  • Serves food
  • Local walk suggestion: Part of the Templer Way walking route runs along the river bank and can be picked up at the Coombe Cellars. Only possible at low tide and wellies are needed!

The Five Bells Inn, Clyst Hydon
EX15 2NT

Known for its food and complete with a beautifully landscaped garden.

  • Car park
  • Serves food
